Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here Schenectady Muni Golf, y’know, the golf course down in Schenectady. Folks been playin’ there for a long, long time, I hear.
It’s a big place, this golf course, real big. They say it’s got 6600 yards or somethin’. That’s a whole lotta walkin’, lemme tell ya! My old legs ain’t gonna carry me that far, no sirree! But them young fellas, they run around that place like it’s nothin’.
The greens, they ain’t flat like a pancake, y’know. They got all sorts of humps and bumps. Makes it tricky, I guess, to get that little white ball in the hole. And the fairways, they’re tighter than a tick on a dog’s back. Got all that tall grass and stuff growin’ all around. Gotta hit it straight, or you’ll be lookin’ for your ball all day.
- They got a place to hit them balls far, what do they call it? A drivin’ range, that’s it. So you can practice whackin’ that ball before you go out on the course.
- And they got a place to practice them little putts, too. The puttin’ green, I think they call it.
- Oh, and if you get hungry or thirsty, they got places to eat and drink, too. Fancy that!
Now, you don’t gotta be from Schenectady to play there, no siree. Anybody can go, long as you pay, I reckon. They welcome folks from all over, even from outta town. That’s mighty neighborly of ’em, I say.
This fella, Jim Thompson, he built this place way back in 1935. That’s a long time ago! Must’ve been a smart fella, knowin’ how to build a golf course and all. It’s got 18 holes, and they call it a par 72, whatever that means. And you gotta wear them special shoes without spikes, so you don’t ruin the greens, I guess.
And get this, they even got them little carts you can ride around in. For them folks who don’t like walkin’, I suppose. My old bones sure would appreciate that! But back in my day, we walked everywhere, uphill both ways, y’know! Kids these days, they got it too easy.
If you wanna know more, you can find all sorts of stuff on the internet, they say. Addresses, phone numbers, all that jazz. But I ain’t got no use for that fancy computer stuff. Give me a good ol’ phone book any day.
They also say that there’s this other old golf course, way out west, called Waveland, been there even longer than Schenectady. But that’s a whole ‘nother story for a whole ‘nother time.
So, if you like hittin’ little white balls around a big field, this Schenectady Muni Golf might just be the place for ya. Just don’t expect me to come along, my walkin’ days are mostly done.
But it sounds like a nice place, friendly folks and all. Maybe I’ll just sit on the porch and watch them young’uns play. That’s excitin’ enough for an old lady like me.
